Tamale Hut Café Writers Group meeting for November

There’s lots going on in November, so I’m just going to get right to it:

  • The next THC Writers Group meeting will be on Saturday, November 14th, at the Tamale Hut Café, starting at 1PM (note the time change).  If you can attend, we’d love to see you there.  If you would like to submit a piece for critique during the meeting, please send it to thcwritersgroup@gmail.com, along with an idea of the level of feedback you are looking for, and I will distribute it to the group.  If you have something you would like feedback on but you can’t attend the meeting, I’d be glad to forward it to the group as well.  We can discuss it at the meeting and get some comments back to you via e-mail.
  • Also at the meeting on the 14th, we’ll discuss the round-robin story I proposed at the last meeting.  To refresh your memory, we talked about picking a subject, coming up with a starting point, and deciding on a target word goal for each person’s piece.  I’ll then write the first part, and send it to the first name on a randomized list of participants.  That person will write their portion and send it back to me, and I’ll forward it to the next writer, and so on down the list.  I’m not sure if we’ll get enough details hashed out at the November meeting to get started, but if you can’t attend on the 14th and would like to participate, please let me know before then.
  • The 2015 Chicago Book Expo will be held on November 21st at Columbia College downtown.  We’ll have a table there to promote the THC, the Writers Group and the Reading Series, as well as some of our books, so if you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by.  It’s free to get in, and we had a ball last year
  • Also on Nov. 21st will be the last Tamale Hut Café Reading Series event for 2015, and it’s going to be a good one.  Featured will be the winners of the 2015 Tamale Hut Café Short Story Contest.  The fun starts at 7PM as usual, and there should be plenty of time for open mic afterwards, so bring something to read if you want.  Details will soon be up at https://thcreadingseries.wordpress.com/
  • And if that’s not enough excitement, November means NaNoWriMo!  I find it to be a great motivational tool, and who doesn’t need motivation?  It’s not too late to start, so if you’d like to try, check out http://nanowrimo.org/ for all the details.  I’m on there as “Matt B” so if you want to add me as a Writing Buddy, look me up!
  • If you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, there are a number of events at local libraries, restaurants and coffee houses where you can go write and get encouragement in person.  THC regular Jeanine is hosting one each Sunday at the Oak Park Library: http://oppl.org/events/nanowrimo-write-ins?ajax=1

I hope to see many of you on the 14th for the Writing Group.
